🧠 Brain Bite: “The Pause & Pair” Life Hack
Emotions aren’t the problem - it's when they grab the wheel while you're still buckling up.
For neurodivergent brains, emotional flooding hits like a surprise pop quiz. Your brain scrambles for the nearest comfort exit: chips, cookies, endless scrolling, or the imploding trinity—all three at once.
Sound familiar? You're not broken, and Emmy isn't plotting against you. She's just overwhelmed and doing her best with what she's got.
That’s why we need a pattern interrupt. Enter the Pause & Pair Hack:
Step 1: Pause (30 seconds) Breathe. Feel your feet or give yourself a hug.
Literally say, “Hey Emmy, what's going on?"
This is your moment to hit the brakes and interrupt the autopilot before it sends you down a rabbit hole of regret.
Step 2: Pair a Comfort behavior AND a grounding behavior:
Pair food with something that helps you self-regulate:
🍪 Eat the cookie and wrap up in your favorite weighted blanket
☕ Sip tea and rub a fidget stone
🍓 Grab a snack and turn on calming music
🧠 This trains your brain: "I can eat for comfort AND have other tools in my toolkit."
The goal isn't perfect—it's progress. Small steps count as huge wins here.
Pause & Pair = Complementary Care

🔬Science Corner: Why “Pause & Pair” Works
Why it helps:
Your nervous system craves co-regulation. When you are flying solo, sensory tools and mindful pauses become your backup crew.
That 30-second pause? It wakes up our prefrontal cortex—aka the part of your brain that makes thoughtful decisions instead of panicked ones.
Benefits of Pause & Pair:
✅ Less emotional reactivity
✅ Builds food-awareness without shame
✅ Adds choice instead of chaos
✅ Keeps Emmy out of the entire pantry
💡 Food isn’t the enemy. It’s just not the only option.

🌈 Real Life Examples: A Pocket Plan
It’s 6:47 p.m - You’re tired, touched out, and running on fumes.
There’s nothing in the fridge but pickles and a half-eaten cupcake. The teen’s arguing about curfew. The dog is barking at a squirrel on the moon. And the laundry monster in the corner is eyeing your last clean socks. You're seconds from a meltdown.
Emmy shows up, arms full of takeout menus and sugar cravings.
But this time—you’ve got your Pause & Pair Plan.
You pause. Literally. You stop, sit, put one hand on your chest. “Hey, Emmy. I see you.”
Then you pair:
🥛 You grab a protein bar AND turn on your “low-key feels” playlist.
📿 You nibble a granola bite AND roll your grounding beads between your fingers.
The result?
You still feel things—but now you feel held, not hijacked.
Don’t rush it - stay here, feel every bite, till you feel whole.
Push past the panic, pick peace and prepare.
Use Pause and Pair to avoid despair!

🍽️ Comfort Corner: Calm-Me Down Chocolate Bites
Simple, satisfying, and soothing. A perfect pair for Emmy’s big feelings.
Simplification Modifications
Mix all of the liquid ingredients before adding the dry to keep it to one bowl
Taste/Texture Modifications
Skip the coffee (but don’t skip the hot water - it helps the mixing)
Add a dried cranberry in the center for some added chewiness
Coat in melted chocolate chips (and let it harden) for a crunchy shell
Nutrition/Dietary Modifications
This recipe is already GF & DF - YEAH!
Increase protein by replacing half of the almond meal with more chocolate protein powder

💌 Before You Go
Emmy Emotion Overload isn't moving out. She's here to stay—crying over cereal commercials and eating frosting straight from the container.
But you can set house rules.
Next time she barges into your kitchen like she's starring in Snacks & Sadness: The Netflix Drama, remember:
Pause. Pair. Proceed.
You're not broken. You're brilliantly designed and learning to work with your brain, not against it.
So go ahead, eat the bite. Hug the weighted blanket. Cherish the chocolate.
Stay Delicious,
- Avery Burk
